Vernetta Schmeichel Waltner graduated from Freeman
Academy in 1971 and attended FJC for one year, South
Dakota State University for one summer and one
semester, and graduated from Sioux Falls College
(now University of Sioux Falls) in 1975 with a major
in physical education and a minor in English. Since
her attraction to Freeman was greater than a
wandering spirit, she returned to FJC & FA to teach,
coach, and manage the Secretarial Bureau at the
school. She has worked a total of 19 years for FA,
taking off a few years to play farm wife/mother! She
has worked as Development Director for the school
since June of 2006. Vernetta married Rodney Waltner
(FA ’73) in August of 1975 and they have lived seven
miles northeast of Freeman since then on a dairy
farm. They have two married daughters, Kimberly (FA
’99) and Mindy (FA ’02) and three beautiful
grandchildren! Vernetta still enjoys attending
athletic events and tries to drag Rodney off the
dairy farm occasionally to visit the grandchildren
or explore the U.S. during a dairy convention!
