Is there stuff to do after school?

Lots of 5th-8th graders stay after school to wait for older siblings to get done with basketball practice or other activities. Sometimes, they go to the dorm to play ping-pong or foosball. Most of the time, they just do homework or hang out with friends at the gym. Sports practices and play rehearsals also take place after school throughout the year.

Do I have to be in Art and Music?

Everyone in grades 5-8 is in art and choir. You can choose whether or not to be in Band. Since Band meets during school, anyone who is not in Band stays in the classroom and either has Study Hall or helps the teacher. Students enjoy art and music at Freeman Academy.

What sports do you have?

5th and 6th graders play volleyball in the fall basketball in winter. 7th and 8th graders can play any sport offered including volleyball, soccer, basketball, track, cross country, golf and cheerleading. Sports at Freeman Academy bring out lots of participation and enthusiasm.

Is the food good?

Students agree that the Academy cooks are the best! Every day, they feed you scrumptious meals and there’s plenty to eat. The chocolate caramel bars are especially popular!

Do you talk about God?

Everyone goes to chapel on Mondays and Fridays. In chapel, we sing, pray and listen to speakers. As one student says, “speakers always have something fun and interesting to talk about. I like it when we get to discuss things amongst ourselves.” Each grade also has Bible class or daily devotions together. During chapel, Bible class and devotions, you get to hear the stories of God’s people and how Jesus came into the world to be our Savior. You and your classmates can also share prayer requests and what’s going on in your own lives. All of these experiences are designed to help you become a stronger Christian.

Do you have recess?

5th-8th graders have some recess time built into their lunch period. Sometimes teachers also let you go outside to enjoy nice weather.

Will I have lots of homework?

When they first come to Freeman Academy, some students have to get used to having homework, but most agree that it’s not too much. Older kids can expect a little more, but probably not more than at any other school. Teachers are always willing to help you if you have questions.

How long is the school day?

Classes for 5th-8th graders begin at 8:20 a.m. and dismiss at 3:20.

How do kids dress for school?

Freeman Academy does not have uniforms, but students are expected to wear clothing that is clean and in nice condition. You may not wear clothes which feature inappropriate messages. Teachers may ask you to dress up for special events like concerts, contests and athletic events.

Do we learn to know students in other grades?

Students have a lot of chances to interact with one another. All students go to chapel and lunch together. Since most classes take place in the same building, students also see each other throughout the day. Depending on the size of each class, either 5th-6th or 6th-7th graders meet together in class with one teacher.

What do you call teachers?

Students address each teacher according to that teacher’s preference. Some teachers are on a first name basis, some allow informal names (like “Mrs. C.” or “Mr. K.”) and others prefer that students use full names (“Mr. Epp”). No matter what you call them, it is important to give teachers the respect they deserve.
